Abstract

The Initiation Charge of the Ku Klux Klan was a declaration of the goals of the order established after the Civil War to maintain white supremacy in the United States. Although its authorship cannot be determined, it sets out for recruits the philosophy, goals, and expectations of the order. The Initiation Charge makes plain the fact that the order was intended to terrorize and suppress Black participation in public life, including politics.
