Abstract

The Creek Nation stretched throughout much of the southeastern United States prior to the Indian Removal Act of Andrew Jackson. These collections of tribes formed a confederacy that drafted numerous laws meant to help govern their lands and maintain the unstable peace between the various tribes while also establishing rules to deal with the growing American presence in the region. Many of their laws focused on day-to-day relations between their members, but some of the laws focused on relations between Blacks (both free and slaves who had escaped from slaveholders) and whites with the Native American populations. Within these laws a significant double standard is clear between the treatment of Blacks and whites within the Creek Nation.
