Abstract

Zephaniah Kingsley was a British-born Quaker who established the Kingsley Plantation in Jacksonville, Florida, which today is part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve designated by the U.S. National Park Service. Despite living in the U.S. South, Kingsley favored the Spanish system of slavery and race relations, emphasizing that those of mixed race should be granted greater privilege in society and that slaves should have the ability to work for compensation and earn their freedom. In this treatise, Kingsley sought to condemn the American system of slavery and race relations in the South in favor of the more liberal Spanish system and faced a great amount of backlash from his neighbors and leaders in Florida. As a result, he eventually moved his interracial family to Haiti, where laws were more tolerant of interracial people and free Blacks.
