Bayard Rustin was a labor and civil rights organizer in the mid-twentieth century. Known for his organization of one of the most visible civil rights demonstrations, the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, Rustin worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others on local protests as well. One such event was the yearlong 1956 Montgomery Bus Boycott in Alabama. His diary of the events in Montgomery captures the community tension, fear of outside involvement, and strategies by African American to ease these tensions. Rustin was present for various important meetings and witnessed public rallies in his role as a strategist and advisor.
