The Manhattan Medical Society was founded in May 1930 by Dr. Louis Wright and other Black physicians with the main goal of ending racism within the medical profession. The first pamphlet the society published, “Equal Opportunity: No More, No Less!,” was addressed to Edwin R. Embree, the president of the Julius Rosenwald Fund, established in 1917. Since the premise behind the Julius Rosenwald Fund was “the well-being of mankind,” the Manhattan Medical Society decided to point out the many injustices faced by Black patients, nurses, and doctors and the necessity of integrating educational institutions and hospitals.
