Abstract

Paul Robeson was a famous singer, actor, and athlete, labor advocate, and civil rights leader from New Jersey. He was the son of an escaped slave and was a top student and football player at Rutgers before going on to law school at Columbia University. After beginning an acclaimed career in the performing arts, Robeson was increasingly politically active in the 1930s, culminating in his support of the Soviet Union during the Cold War and being subsequently targeted by some members of the U.S. Congress for his political leanings. As a Black socialist, Robeson sought in this 1954 essay to connect the African anticolonial struggle for freedom in the Caribbean with revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh’s campaign for independence from the French in Vietnam.
