Abstract

David George was born enslaved in Virginia and eventually headed south toward South Carolina in an attempt to escape his previous owners. During his escape, he was captured by the Creek chief Blue Salt, who made him his slave, though the experience was significantly different. During the course of his enslavement with Blue Salt, the son of George’s owner learned of his location and attempted to trade for him but was unsuccessful. After several years, George escaped again, headed south, and became exposed to writing and reading via the Bible by a Scottish trader.
