Abstract
In 1724, France issued the Code Noir in Louisiana to regulate the interaction of whites and Blacks (called Noirs). Much of it was copied from the first Code Noir instituted in 1685 for the French colony of Saint Domingue. It was difficult to enforce and resulted in a brutal system of slavery in Louisiana that lasted into the Spanish and British periods of control.
