Abstract

John S. Rock (1825–1866), abolitionist and physician, was born free in Salem, New Jersey. He also studied dentistry and law. Late in life he became one of the first Blacks admitted to the bar in Massachusetts. An ardent advocate for the abolition of slavery, he offered free medical services to self-emancipated men and women. He also fought hard for African American voting rights and economic justice.
