Abstract

In 1857 George Washington’s step-grandson and namesake, George Washington Parke Custis, died at the age of seventy-six. The Custis estate in 1857 included about 200 enslaved workers, among whom were Wesley Norris, his sister Mary, and a cousin. Under the terms of Custis’s will, his enslaved workers were to be set free once his debts—which were many and large—were paid off.
