Abstract
By 1877 the fighting in the Civil War had been over for a dozen years, but in many ways the struggle of Black Americans to obtain basic civil rights continued. With the failure of Reconstruction after the presidential election of 1876, Blacks across the county became disillusioned with the racist culture in which they had to live. The western frontier, opened up through the Homestead Act of 1862, offered Black Americans a chance to create their own communities on their own terms.
