The Crisis is the official magazine of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Founded in 1910, it is considered the world’s oldest Black publication. Since its inception, the journal has highlighted the African American community’s struggles in their quest for political and social equality. The October 1919 volume of The Crisis opened with an editorial discussing the role of lynching and white supremacy in the state of Texas, likening it to hell on earth for Black people living there. It declared that America could not become a civilized nation until it conquered these evil forces. The uncredited article “The Riot at Longview, Texas” supported this assertion. It examined how white mob violence affected more than the targeted individual and often gave them little choice but to leave town or resort to violence to protect themselves, their families, and their homes because law enforcement would not intervene.
