Abstract
Jessie Redmon Fauset (1882–1961) was born into poverty, but after studies at Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania, her career as a teacher and as an editor elevated her to middle-class status. Her work at The Crisis made her integral to the Harlem Renaissance as she helped foster the works of such prolific African American writers as Langston Hughes and Georgia Douglas Johnson.
