Abstract

The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom Organizing Manual No. 2, signed by Bayard Rustin as deputy director and Cleveland Robinson as chairman of the administrative committee for the march, outlined the purpose and goals of the rally along with instructions for attendance. The pamphlet, presenting the well-organized plan, was distributed before the 1963 rally and managed to encourage the attendance of more than 200,000 people. The main organizational objective was to get the protesters in and out of Washington, D.C., in one day, which meant that many people endured back-to-back overnight trips by bus or train. The administrative committee planned for this and encouraged protesters to pack meals and water. The primary goal of the rally was to end racial discrimination with a main focus on unfair employment practices. One of the keynote speakers was Martin Luther King Jr., who delivered his now-famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
