Abstract

Melvin “Mel” Boozer (1945–1987) was a sociologist and gay rights activist. A native of Washington, D.C., he attended Dartmouth College on a scholarship. He then went to Yale University to work on his Ph.D. After receiving his degree he joined the faculty of the University of Maryland as professor of sociology. Boozer was also active in the gay rights movement of his native Washington, D.C. In 1979 he became president of the Gay Activists Alliance of Washington and helped secure passage of the Sexual Assault Reform Act, which decriminalized relations between consenting adults.
