Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (1936–1996) was a fierce advocate for civil rights in the twentieth-century South. She had served in the Texas state senate before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first African American woman from the South to serve in that body. Jordan won high praise for her public addresses, notably her opening statement before the House Judiciary Committee during impeachment hearings for President Richard Nixon in 1974. Jordan delivered the keynote address at the 1976 Democratic National Convention, “Who Then Will Speak for the Common Good?” Fifteen years later, and after retiring from public office, Jordan once again addressed the Democratic National Convention in a speech titled “Change: From What to What?”
