Abstract

This drawing of the village of Secotan was created by John White, an artist and colonist, in 1585. White accompanied the first expedition to Roanoke Island as its official artist and cartographer. Over thirteen months, White produced over seventy watercolor drawings of the plants, animals, and people of the region. This illustration of the village of Secotan (spelled "Secoton" in the drawing) provides a unique insight into indigenous settlement patterns, subsistence practices, and ceremonial life in the sixteenth century. White’s drawings are some of the earliest surviving images of Native Americans.
