Abstract

This painting is one of more than 100 completed by Carl Rakeman starting in the 1920s on behalf of the Bureau of Public Roads, the forerunner of the Federal Highway Administration, to commemorate notable events in the development of transportation in the United States. Rakeman’s work adorned the walls of government buildings across the country.
