The first known cases of HIV/AIDS in the United States occurred in 1981. Initially the disease and the cause of transmission were unknown, but it seemed to be affecting gay men disproportionately. Communities of young gay men, especially in New York City and San Francisco, were devastated by the disease, which attacked a person’s immune system and caused a rapid decline and death.
