This 1905 photograph shows the resort neighborhood of Coney Island, New York. Coney Island began as a place for New Yorkers to escape the heat during the late nineteenth century. With the advent of the subway system at the turn of the century, large amusement parks attracted even more visitors than the area’s famous beach. While other cities installed their own amusement parks at the end of their respective streetcar lines, none of these were as famous or as influential as the parks on Coney Island.
