Abstract

This document is an example of an American political or societal cartoon, produced as a lithograph. Lithographic prints or flyers were used during the nineteenth century as a means of mass communication to highlight events, portray images and scenes, or convey a message, whether it be political or social. Lithographs had been around for centuries, especially in Europe, but modern lithography was new in the 1800s, invented in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1796. Lithography uses simple chemical processes to create an image and can be used to print text or images onto paper or other material.
