“President’s Levee, or All Creation Going to the White House” is an aquatint produced by the British artist Robert Cruikshank. It was originally published as the frontispiece to Volume II of a book of travel stories, The Playfair Papers, or Brother Jonathan, the Smartest Nation in All Creation, by Hugo Playfair, published in London in 1841. Cruikshank established his reputation as a caricaturist, and it is not certain whether the book was intended to be taken seriously. It is not even clear if the author was a real person or if the name Playfair was a pseudonym used by the man believed to be the book’s editor, Paul Paterson.
