This image from October 31, 1765 shows the masthead of a popular American newspaper, The Pennsylvania Journal and Weekly Advertiser, warning that it may be forced out of business by the Stamp Act. Newspapers were an essential facet of print culture in colonial America, with the first successful newspaper being founded in the early 1700s. By the time of the Revolution, there were over thirty newspapers in the Anglo-American colonies. The typical American newspaper consisted of two pages and followed the style of London papers. These newspapers often featured news from Great Britain and the American colonies, local news, and advertisements. However, newspapers were not the only form of print media in the American colonies. The literate population was also informed through broadsides, proclamations, and almanacs.
