Abstract

This cartoon, first printed in the March 26, 1812, edition of Boston Gazette, introduced and popularized the term “gerrymander.” Most newspapers in the early republic were highly partisan—essentially extensions of political parties. Rather than provide objective reporting of facts or a balance of contrasting views, the partisan press sought to inflame its base’s passions and provide the party’s perspective on issues of the day. In addition to motivating party members, this reporting communicated the party’s message to the faithful so they could present unified positions in public discourse and convince others to support the party.
