Abstract

“The Way They Go to California” is a lithograph produced by Nathaniel Currier, the senior partner of Currier & Ives, the best-known lithographic printmaker and distributor in nineteenth-century America. The company Nathaniel Currier formed in 1835 in New York City became one of the most successful art studios of the period. Its prints were found in homes across the country. Even today, Currier & Ives prints are reproduced and used on calendars for people who cherish the images they evoke of an earlier era.
