This document is a copy of the earliest map of New Haven Colony and is usually credited to John Brockett, a surveyor and colonist, who was one of the first settlers of the colony. New Haven was founded by John Davenport, a leading clergyman, and Theophilus Eaton, a wealthy merchant, both of whom were from London. Their mission was to establish a colony that would become both a religious utopia and a center of commerce. The venture was supported by a number of wealthy and prominent individuals who established the colony in 1638. Brockett’s map identifies the names and home lots of the first settlers. The names include a number of wealthy merchants as well as nine women.
