Abstract

This editorial cartoon was produced by Thomas Nast in 1868 for Harper’s Weekly. Promoted as “a journal of civilization,” Harper’s Weekly began publication in January 1857 and continued until May 1916. The journal featured both domestic and foreign news, humor, essays, cartoons, and illustrations. During the Civil War, Harper’s Weekly was the most widely read publication in the United States. Although originally supporting Stephen Douglas, a Democrat, during the election of 1860, the newspaper shifted its views during the war in support of Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party.
