Abstract

By the late 1800s, women in several countries had gained the ability to vote in local or national elections. This was the result of a global feminist movement to secure the right to vote. In the United States, Wyoming and Utah became the first U.S. territories to enact women’s suffrage (Utah also became the first state to grant women the vote). However, efforts to secure voting rights for women at the national level were repeatedly blocked in Congress or by the states.
