Abstract

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5, “Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls,” is one of seventeen declared objectives adopted by the UN’s member states in 2015. Together, the seventeen goals are known as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda is intended to bring together developed and underdeveloped countries in a shared vision for peace and prosperity in the twenty-first century. Among these goals are reducing the effects of climate change, ending poverty and hunger, assuring affordable health care and quality education, and supplying affordable and clean energy to people worldwide. The agenda also assures the development of institutions that support peace and justice and that reduce inequality—including inequalities that affect women worldwide.
