Abstract

In Massachusetts in the early 1800s, entrepreneur Francis Cabot Lowell developed a new system of manufacturing that became common throughout New England. Named for its founder, the Lowell system attempted to cut costs and make textile production more efficient while also eliminating some of the worst labor practices of the Industrial Revolution.
