Abstract

Many New York City garment manufacturers were known for exploiting their workers in the early twentieth century. Female workers were especially vulnerable. Low wages, long hours, hazardous working conditions, workplace safety violations, and sexual harassment were among the workers’ complaints. Workers often tried to organize labor unions to negotiate with factory owners.
