Abstract

Adrienne Rich (1929–2012) was an award-winning writer known especially for her poetry examining the lesbian experience, promotingwomen’s liberation, and urging feminism toward intersectionality. “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Experience,” published in 1980, is one of many essays written in the 1980s that identified a particular flaw within the feminist movement: its lack of inclusion of women considered outside the realm of normalcy.
