In her 1987 memoir, The Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Women Who Started It, activist and educator Jo Ann Gibson Robinson writes about the 1956 Montgomery Bus Boycott for integration in transportation and the role the Women’s Political Council, of which she was the president, played in organizing it. Martin Luther King Jr., perhaps the most recognizable name in relation to the bus boycott, acknowledged the vital role Robinson played in launching the boycott and making it a success. In this excerpt, Robinson describes the carpool system that was organized to take the place of the buses to transport Black workers during the 382-day boycott.
