bell hooks (1952–2021) was the Distinguished Professor in Residence at Berea College. Born Gloria Jean Watkins, she adopted the name bell hooks to honor her grandmother and used lowercase letters in her name as a way to highlight her message rather than herself. In addition to her role as educator, hooks was a prolific poet, essayist, social commentator, and feminist. Her work analyzed feminism’s need for inclusivity to thrive and serve its true purpose: to change social structures.
