Abstract

Denise Harmon’s article “Stonewall Means Fight Back!” first appeared in the periodical Women of Youth against War and Fascism inthe summer of 1973 and described the police attack and subsequent rebellion four years earlier at a bar that served a largely lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) clientele. The LGBT community was not new, but it had existed mainly on the fringes of society and kept largely secret and private. Inevitably, however, a movement for LGBT rights joined the civil rights movement, the Chicano movement, second-wave feminism, the anti-war movement, and other social justice movements of the mid-twentieth century.
