Abstract

Even though the subject of this painting is in an urban and therefore crowded setting, the work illustrates Hopper’s typical themes of loneliness and isolation. To achieve this effect, Hopper had to choose a particular angle and manipulate the natural properties of light to suggest that the subject is surrounded by nobody even though there had to be strong evidence of other people all around her. Hopper simply chose not to place most of that evidence in the painting.
