Abstract

Editorial cartoons have been an important form of political commentary, often capturing the irony of political action in vivid, easily remembered imagery that creates a lasting impression. This cartoon, entitled “Betsy Ross Gingrich” by its creator, Steve Greenberg, appeared in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on February 27, 1995. The cartoon is a clever attack on the Contract with America from the perspective of those who favor the social welfare policies of the New Deal and Great Society. The Contract with America was the culmination of a conservative backlash against the welfare state created by the New Deal and Great Society.
