After losing the presidential election, Donald Trump dishonestly propagated the idea that he actually won the election, making multiple unsupported accusations of voter fraud, all of which were disproved. Despite the reality of the situation, Trump clung to the fantasy that he could hold onto power by preventing Congress from counting the electoral votes on January 6. To that end, he and a circle of advisors called for and organized a rally on that date with the express purpose of stopping Congress from certifying the victory of Joe Biden. Trump and a number of his allies gave increasingly inflammatory speeches to the assembled crowd at the perniciously titled “stop the steal” rally. After the speeches, which called for violence and indicated that the only way Trump could hold onto power would be to interrupt Congress from counting the votes, the mob marched on the Capitol.
