Born in London, England, Frances Anne “Fanny” Kemble (1809–1893) was an actress, writer, and abolitionist. While touring the United States, Kemble met Pierce Butler, whom she wed in 1834. Butler was part of one of the wealthiest families in America at the time. Although they lived in Philadelphia, their holdings included cotton and rice plantations in Georgia. Butler inherited the plantations in 1836 and in 1838, and Butler, Kemble, and their children traveled south to the properties.
