Abstract

Queen Noor of Jordan was born and raised in the United States to a father of Syrian-Lebanese descent and a mother of Swedish descent. She studied architecture and urban planning before taking a series of jobs designing cities in Australia, Iran, and the United Kingdom. Drawn to the Middle East because of her heritage, Queen Noor started working for Royal Jordanian Airlines in the late 1970s, where she met King Hussein of Jordan. She married King Hussein in 1978 and converted to Islam. Queen Noor was accepted for her conversion and her Arabic ancestry and became an active public figure involved in urban planning, economic development, and women’s empowerment in Jordan.
