The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the most important Catholic shrines in the world. It was inspired by the story of an Indigenous Christian, Juan Diego. Mary, the mother of Jesus, appeared to Juan Diego in December 1531. The earliest account of what happened was recorded by the native scholar and government official Antonio Valeriano in the mid- to late 1500s. However, the original manuscript was later lost. The oldest existing version is a copy made in 1649 by Luis Lasso de la Vega.
