Américo Paredes wrote “Alma pocha” in 1936 as a response to Mexicans who felt that Mexican Americans, or Chicanos, were beneath them. As in many of his works, Paredes highlights the stereotype that Mexican Americans either cannot speak Spanish or do not speak it well. The poem, or corrido, is written in an elegant version of standard Spanish as if to drive home his point.
