Abstract

“El Plan Espiritual de Aztlan” is a manifesto cowritten by Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales and the Chicano poet Alberto Urista, who is best known by his penname, Alurista. It was delivered as a speech during the First National Chicano Liberation Youth Conference held in Denver, Colorado, in March of 1969 and adopted as a foundational document of the Chicano Movement. This was a socio-cultural and civil rights movement in which activists relentlessly pursued substantial political representation, increased economic possibilities, and improved educational prospects for Mexican Americans by removing them from generational poverty, marginalization, and powerlessness. “Corky” Gonzales was the head of the Crusade for Justice, a Denver-based civil rights group that organized the youth conference, which was attended by an estimated 1,500 students from across the United States.
