In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson, a Democrat, remained a popular figure in U.S. politics. He had won election in November 1964 with 61.1 percent of the vote, the highest percentage of any presidential candidate since 1820. A native of Texas, Johnson returned there in November 1965 to campaign for fellow Democrat Henry B. González in his reelection campaign ahead of the 1966 vote.
