Abstract

In 2020, while walking up the steps of the Capitol, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was accosted by Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.), who uttered a sexist slur toward the New York representative. Despite being called out by Ocasio-Cortez, Yoho remained indignant, refuting the allegations on the grounds that he had a wife and daughters. In her speech to the House of Representatives, the Ocasio-Cortez pointed to the long-standing systemic nature of sexism among government and legislative officials. Ocasio-Cortez pointed to the long-standing systemic nature of sexism is the youngest woman elected to Congress, the first female member of the Democratic Socialists of America elected to Congress, a Latina, and a vocal champion of progressive issues.
