Abstract

The “Decade of the Hispanic” carried into the 1990s with a surge of Hispanic political participation, not just in local politics but on the national level as well. While the Hispanic voice had been amplified thanks to the support of presidents like Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter and aspiring political leaders like Robert Kennedy in the 1970s, by the 1990s the number of political leaders who were of Hispanic descent began to increase.
