Abstract

On July 26, 1953, a ragtag group of 136 revolutionaries launched an assault on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba. The leader of the group, Fidel Castro, planned the attack to seize weapons that would allow them to oppose and eventually topple the government of Fulgencio Batista y Zaldivar (1901–1973). The attack went badly from the start, and the rebels were quickly overwhelmed. More than a third of them either died in the fighting or were executed later by Batista’s regime.
