Abstract

The experience of immigrants and migrants coming to the United States in the early twentieth century has been widely documented and explored, but mostly through the eyes of the men who entered the country. An often-neglected component of this experience was that of the women and girls who immigrated to the United States, often with their spouses or families but occasionally on their own as they sought to start a new life. If the experience for a male immigrant or migrant worker was considerably challenging, a female traveling to the United States faced a significantly greater struggle to make it on her own.
