Abstract

Written in 1935, “The Mexico-Texan,” like Américo Paredes’s other works, articulates the struggles of Mexican Americans living north of the border in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. Américo Paredes highlights that these people live in two worlds but are not comfortable or completely welcome in either. They are seen as outsiders both in the United States and in Mexico. The language Paredes uses, writing in English with an exaggerated Spanish accent, underscores the theme.
