Abstract

By the year 1300 CE the world had changed significantly from the patterns it had followed only a hundred years earlier. The major world power of the time, China, had recently been reunited after several centuries divided into separate states. Its Mongol rulers were in the process of trying to subject China’s neighbors to their will. Over the next two hundred years the world changed again—long-distance trade, made easier by the policies of the Mongol Empire, expanded dramatically and spread through caravans across central Asia to the borders of Europe.
